Feb. 13, 2012
PITTSBURGH -- The Point Park University women's basketball team moved up one spot to No. 22 in this week's NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll released Monday (Feb. 13) by the national office.
The Pioneers (20-5, 11-1 AMC) are ranked for the third week in a row. They broke into the national ratings for the first time in program history at No. 25 Jan. 30 and then climbed up to No. 23 Feb. 6.
There was not a lot of movement in the poll as Friends (Kan.) (20-8) experienced the biggest jump of any team by going up three spots to No. 17. There were three new schools in this week's poll, and those are the three teams ranked below Point Park.
Point Park moves up in the poll despite taking a loss to start last week. But the Pioneers have won 15 of their last 16 to set a school record with 20 wins. Point Park lost at Walsh, 48-46, Feb. 7, but it had won 13 in a row before that.
The Pioneers then made good work of the final two days of the week in getting a 57-39 victory over Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday followed by an 88-50 rout of Fisher on Sunday. Roberts Wesleyan entered the matchup with Point Park as an 18-win team.
Point Park is one of the top defensive teams in the country. The Pioneers rank second in the naiton in scoring defense at 51.2 ppg. Only NAIA Division II No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan (26-2) gives up less points at 48.6 ppg.
The Pioneers are tied for third nationally in field-goal defense at .329. Point Park is second in the country in turnover margin (+8.2) as it commits 15.9 per game and forces 24.1 per game.
Point Park has two more regular-season games left. The Pioneers visit Carlow on Tuesday (7:30 p.m.) and Daemen on Saturday (2 p.m.). Point Park is in first place in the AMC, just ahead of Daemen (20-6, 10-2 AMC).
Point Park is already in the AMC playoffs and will host a first-round home game in the four-team playoff on Feb. 21. Game time is TBA at CCAC-South Gym.
