Point Park women capture Bevo Francis Title with win over host Rio Grande

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- The Point Park University women's basketball team defeated host Rio Grande, 73-66, Saturday to take the championship at the Bevo Francis Tournament.
 
The Pioneers are 2-1 on the young season and won their second straight. The victory over previously unbeaten Rio Grande (3-1) is a big one for the Pioneers' program that is adjusting to a first-year coach and a handful of new, key players.
 
"I'm very proud of our kids. This was a huge win for our program," said Point Park coach Tony Grenek.
 
Joncelyn Peterkin, a 6-2 center from West Mifflin, Pa., was named the tournament MVP Peterkin had 13 points, six rebounds and six blocks in the championship game, one day after putting up 17 points and 10 rebounds in a 62-49 win over Midway (Ky.).
 
Kristen Beatty, a senior guard from Pittsburgh, had 19 points and eight rebounds on 9 of 13 shooting to play her way on to the all-tournament team. Also on the all-tourney team was sophomore Katresa Savisky, a transfer from Butler County CC who came off the bench for 16 points on 7 of 9 field goals.
 
Point guard April Austin totaled 12 points, eight assists and just one turnover. Sarah Sandin chipped in nine points off the bench by burying three big treys.
 
The Pioneers built a 33-28 lead at halftime. The Pioneers were tested in the second half, but they shot 53 percent from the field the last 20 minutes to stay in front. Point Park shot 47 percent (30 of 64) overall, and held Rio Grande to 37-percent shooting. Rio Grande turned the ball over 21 times compared to 17 for Point Park.
 
Guard Kaylee Helton had a team-high 17 points for Rio Grande, but she went 4 of 12 from the field in doing so. Jayvonna Sadler added 12 points and nine rebounds.
 
Point Park's next game is Tuesday at Fairmont State. Game time is 5:30 p.m.
