PITTSBURGH – Point Park University women’s basketball head coach Tony Grenek has signed guard Carly Corcoran from Baldwin High School. She will join the program as freshmen for the upcoming 2012-13 season.
Corcoran is a 5-6 guard who average a solid 8.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game last year at Baldwin High School. She started all 28 games for the Highlanders team that was 19-8 and reached the WPIAL Class AAAA semifinals and the PIAA Class AAAA second round.
Corcoran earned four basketball letters at Baldwin, and she played her final year under former Point Park men’s basketball point guard Gavin Prosser as head coach. A high-honors student, Corcoran plays AAU ball for Metro USA Pittsburgh.
“Carly is a solid outside shooter, which was a weakness of our team last year,” said Grenek. “She made a ton of progress her senior year at Baldwin under Gavin Prosser, and she played against some of the best competition in the WPIAL. Her best days of playing basketball are still ahead of her. She’s an excellent student and will be a tremendous addition to our team.”
Point Park is coming off perhaps its best season in program history when it ended the 2011-12 season at 23-7 overall and No. 21 in the Final NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. It was the first season for the Pioneers under Grenek, who led the Pioneers to their first-ever American Mideast Conference title and NAIA Division II national tournament appearance. Point Park lost a heartbreaker to then-No. 10 Corban (Ore.), 60-58, in the first round of the 32-team NAIA Division II national tourney.
Point Park will welcome back two starters this season – senior guards April Austin, a point guard from Penn Hills, Pa., and Emily Schartner, a shooting guard from Finleyville, Pa.
