POINT PARK TEAM NOTES (13-4, 6-3 KIAC)
The Pioneers are tied for their best start in school history at 13-4 overall, 6-3 KIAC. They started the year 12-2 and in first place at 6-1 KIAC before hitting a bump with losing their last two KIAC games. The Pioneers had won eight in a row before that.
Point Park lost at conference-leading Alice Lloyd (Ky.) (64-57) and at KIAC preseason No. 2 pick Asbury (Ky.) (83-75) on Jan. 4-5. The Pioneers are now in second place and 1.5 games behind Alice Lloyd (5-1) for the KIAC lead entering an important road trip coming up this weekend (Jan. 11-13).
But the schedule gets easier for the Pioneers as it is their last KIAC road trip of the year. Additionally, Point Park has already finished its home-and-home series with the four of the top five teams in the league (not including themselves). All that’s left are games versus the bottom four teams of the nine-team conference, a stretch that begins this weekend.
Point Park leads the KIAC in scoring defense (60.82 ppg), field-goal percentage defense (.375) and rebounds per game (42.35). Offensively, Point Park has four starters averaging double figures and score 68.1 ppg.
Probable Starters: G April Austin, Sr., 11.6 ppg; G Emily Schartner, Sr., 13.1 ppg; G/F Katresa Savisky, Jr., 8.9 ppg; G/F Teresa Davis, Jr., 10.9 ppg; F Ja'Nia McPhatter, So., 15.4 ppg.
BEREA TEAM NOTES (4-11, 0-2 KIAC)
The Mountaineers don't score very much as they are next to last in the KIAC at 52.3 ppg with only St. Louis College of Pharmacy being lower at 47.0 ppg. Berea plays good defense as it is third in the league in scoring defense (65.7 ppg) and field-goal percentage defense (.391). But the Mountaineers have struggled from the field with only 34 percent accuracy overall (8th in KIAC).
Berea has lost four games in a row, including a 78-65 defeat at Alice Lloyd in its last game Jan. 8. The only other KIAC game for them is a 55-42 loss at Midway on Nov. 20. Berea is without second-leading scorer Johnesha Warren (10.5 ppg), who has missed every game since Dec. 15.
Probable Starters: G Mikola Burks, Fr., 11.3 ppg; G Erika Parks, So., 4.3 ppg; G Malena Steve, Jr., 2.1 ppg; F Shelby Romine, Jr. 9.1 ppg; F Anna Loveless, Fr., 4.7 ppg.
MIDWAY (KY.) TEAM NOTES (4-11, 2-3 KIAC)
The Eagles don't have a great overall record at 4-11, but they are right in the mix in the KIAC standings at 2-3 conference. Midway lost at Point Park, 53-47, on Dec. 18, which was its last game played. The Eagles have also lost at Brescia (86-7) and vs. Asbury (103-78). Their KIAC wins at Carlow (60-57) and versus Berea (55-42).
The only major category where the Eagles rank in the top five of the KIAC is total rebounding average, where they rank 2nd behind Point Park at 41.2 rpg. Midway is seventh in the league in both scoring (65.3 ppg) and scoring defense (72.5 ppg).
In the loss at Point Park on Dec. 18, Midway was down, 27-26 at the half before losing 53-47. Forward Star Armonstrong had 10 points and 10 rebounds, and guard Eric Lucas had 10 points and seven boards.
Probable Starters: G Erin Lucas, Sr., 8.3 ppg; G Ashley Lucas, Sr., 6.1 ppg; G Whitley Henry, Sr., 8.5 ppg; G/F McKinzie Laswell, So., 7.8 ppg; F Dayanara Rivera, Fr., 9.1 ppg.
ST. LOUIS COLLEGE OF PHARMACY TEAM NOTES (1-6, 0-0 KIAC)
The Eutetics are 1-6 overall and 0-0 KIAC and haven't played a game in over a month. St. Louis COP lost to MacMurray on Dec. 4 for its fifth loss in a row. The game versus Point Park is their KIAC opener. The Eutectics were picked last in the KIAC Preseason Poll, and they were 0-21 overall and 0-7 KIAC last year.
St. Louis COP comes in near the bottom or last in every major statistical category in the KIAC. The Eutectics score a KIAC-low 47.0 ppg and get outscored by 21.0 ppg. St. Louis is without a double-digit scorer and has started three freshmen and two sophomores for the most part.
