PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University senior Emily Schartner was named to the Capital One Academic All-America (R) College Division Women's Basketball Third Team by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Monday (Feb. 18).

Schartner, a native of Finleyville, Pa., and a graduate of Ringgold High School, made the third team with a 4.00 GPA in Biological Sciences. She is second on Point Park (22-6, 11-4 KIAC) in scoring with 12.3 ppg and is also averaging 5.4 rpg.

The Capital One Academic All-America (R) College Division teams are made up of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and junior colleges. The teams are voted on by members of CoSIDA for their combined performances on the court and in the classroom.

By being named to the third team, Schartner has essentially been voted among the top 15 players in the NAIA (Division I & II) in the terms of academic success and women's basketball performance. There are five players each on the first, second and third teams, and the 15 members are all from NAIA schools.

The Capital One Academic All-American (R) of the Year is Hollie German of NAIA Division I No. 7 Lee (Tenn.). She is averaging 20.04 ppg and has a 3.98 GPA in math and secondary education.

Schartner and teammate Katresa Savisky were named to the Capital One Academic All-District (R) First Team. All first-team selections have their names forward for Academic All-America consideration.

After graduation in May, Schartner will attend the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy. She has already been accepted into that program and will begin classes in Fall 2013.

An excellent shooter, Schartner leads the Pioneers with 56 made 3-pointers. From the foul line, she is shooting 83.8 percent (83 for 99). Schartner is in her second year with the Pioneers after transferring from the New Jersey Institute of Technology. She has been a starter both years at Point Park.
