WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. -- The Point Park University women's basketball team turned Sunday's first-place KIAC showdown with Brescia (Ky.) University into a 32-point rout. The Pioneers improved to 12-2 overall and 6-1 KIAC with their eighth-straight win, 86-54, over Brescia (8-4, 4-2 KIAC) at CCAC-South.
Point Park started the day holding just a half game lead over Brescia for first place in the KIAC standings. Brescia had won at Carlow, 67-58, on Saturday night to put possession of first place on the line for Sunday's game.
But Point Park made a big statement with its most lopsided win of the year. Defensively, the Pioneers held their opponent under 60 points for the sixth game in a row. On offense, they sank a season-high 15 3-poiners and shot 52 percent from long range. Point Park had won at Brescia, 77-72 on Dec. 1 and has now swept the season series.
Forward Ja'Nia McPhatter led Point Park once again with 21 points on 7 of 11 shooting, and she also added eight points and five assists. She had 15 points by halftime to stake Point Park to a 41-25 lead at the break.
Point guard April Austin continued to find her stroke offensively with 20 points on 6 of 11 from long range to go along with seven assists. The Pioneers are 5-0 since their floor leader came back after having to sit out the first half.
Brittany Dunmire, a senior guard, came off the bench for 15 points and buried 5 of 7 treys. Guard Emily Schartner added 12 points and six assists and was 3 for 6 from long range.
Other starters Katresa Savisky and Teresa Davis combined for just two points but set the tone defensively in shutting down Brescia's perimeter scorers. That was particularly the case in the second half when the Pioneers held Brescia to 30 percent shooting.
Point Park exerted control early as it did not allow a Brescia field goal for the first 6:20 in building a 14-3 lead at the 13:40 mark of the first half. Brescia put together a 10-0 run to get within 14-13 a few minutes later and was later down 24-21.
But the Pioneers ended the first half on a 17-4 run the last 7:05 for a 41-25 lead at the break. The run was keyed by six points from Anna Shaw, 3-pointers by Dunmire and Austin and an old-fashion 3-point play from McPhatter.
The lead reached 20 points at 47-27 on Schartner's long bomb at the 17:13 mark of the second half. The Pioneers were comfortably ahead by 19 points at 52-33 with 14:30 left. That's when a flagrant two foul on Brescia fired up the Point Park team. The Pioneers then turned things up to ratchet the difference above 30 points.
Austin found McPhatter for a layup and a 74-44 lead with 6:30 to go. The Point Park starters came out of the game with the score 77-46 with five minutes left.
Point Park shot 48 percent overall and was 15 for 29 from long range for 52 percent. The Pioneers forced 20 turnovers and held Brescia to 38-percent shooting. Point Park had only 14 turnovers of its own.
Point Park is next in action Jan. 4-5 on a trip to play KIAC opponents Alice Lloyd (Ky.) and Asbury (Ky.).
