PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University women's basketball has signed transfer Samantha Weir, who started her career at NCAA Division II Seton Hill. Weir, a 6-0 forward from Ellwood City, Pa., averaged 18.9 points and 10.0 rebounds per game during her senior year at Riverside High School in 2011-12.
Weir will be a freshman with four years of eligibility when she joins the Pioneers for the 2013-14 season. She did not play in any games while attending Seton Hill last year.
"Sam Weir has a great opportunity to be a dominant player in our league," said Point Park coach Tony Grenek, who is entering his third year at the school. "She's a big, strong post player with quick feet. We are excited she has chosen to become a Pioneer."
Weir scored 1,090 career points at Riverside and led her team to three WPIAL section titles. She was team MVP her final two years and also a WPIAL all-section performer. Weir capped off her high school career by claiming MVP honors of the Roundball Classic all-star game in 2012.
Weir was a high honor roll student every year of her high school career. She lettered three times in basketball and once in softball.
Point Park women's basketball is coming off back-to-back trips to the NAIA Division II national tournament. The Pioneers have 3 of 5 starters returning from last year's team, which was 25-7 to set a team record for wins.
