Point Park's Henderson named AMC Player of the Week (Dec. 27-Jan.2)

PITTSBURGH – Point Park University senior guard Ashley Henderson has been named the American Mideast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, announced the league office Monday. The 5-10 native of Greensburg, Pa., was selected for her play during the week of Dec. 27 to Jan. 2.

Henderson averaged 22.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game last week to lead Point Park (9-4) to an appearance in the championship game of the Notre Dame (OH) Holiday Tournament Dec. 30-31. She played all 40 minutes in both games last week.

Henderson led all scorers with 25 points to lift Point Park to a 63-62 win over host Notre Dame (OH), the #25 team in NAIA Division II, in the first round. She also added six rebounds and five steals in that game.

In the championship game, Henderson scored 15 of her game-high 20 points in the second half to help the Pioneers’ comeback attempt versus perennial NAIA power Shawnee State. Henderson also totaled nine rebounds as Point Park cut its 33-21 halftime deficit down to two possessions in the final minutes. Shawnee State won, 70-61.

Henderson is the first player other than Daemen forward Sarah Soroka to be named AMC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week this year. The senior forward who leads the AMC at 25.1 ppg won the award the first six weeks it was given out.

Henderson leads Point Park at 17.8 points per game and is second on the team in rebounding at 5.8 per game. A two-time All-AMC selection, Henderson is averaging career highs in points and rebounds in this year third year with the Pioneers. The graduate of Greensburg Central Catholic High School was at NCAA DI Pitt and Canisius her freshman season.

Entering Tuesday’s AMC game at Carlow (7:30 p.m.), the 2008-09 AMC Newcomer of the Year had 975 points in her Point Park career.  Henderson currently ranks 11th in school history in total points, and her career scoring average of 15.0 ppg ranks ninth. She has started all 65 games since transferring.
