PITTSBURGH -- Junior point guard Kayla Kiriau has been named the KIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 20-26 after leading Point Park University to an unbeaten record of 3-0 on the week, the league announced on Monday (Jan. 27).
It is the second time this year that the native of Wellington, New Zealand, has won the weekly award from the conference. Kiriau took home the honor this week due mainly to her big performance of 23 points -- a career-high -- on 8 of 10 field goals and 3 of 4 3-pointers in a first-place showdown with Asbury (Ky.) on Jan. 25.
Kiriau scored the Pioneers' final nine points, including the game-winning free throw with 0.5 seconds left to keep Point Park (20-2, 7-2 KIAC) just ahead of Asbury (16-4, 7-2 KIAC) for first place in the conference. Kiriau also added five assists and hit two 3-pointers in the final 1:18 to help the Pioneers rally from a six-point deficit in the closing minutes.
Earlier in the week, Kiriau helped the Pioneers pick up two lopsided wins over Carlow, 74-45, and PSU-Beaver, 97-76. In the KIAC win over Carlow, she totaled six points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals in 17 minutes. The starters did not play very much in the game versus PSU-Beaver, either, including Kiriau.
For the year, the transfer from Sheridan (Wyo.) JC is averaging 10.1 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 3.5 apg, 2.2 spg and shooting 42 percent from the field.
She and the Pioneers will be next in action at Cincinnati Christian on Jan. 31, the start of a three game road trip that includes visits to Midway (Ky.) Feb. 1 and to play St. Louis College of Pharmacy at neutral court Midway on Feb. 2.
