PITTSBURGH-- No. 21 Point Park University won a match up against fellow undefeated local team La Roche College, 84-70, Tuesday night in a non-conference women’s basketball road game.

Freshman center Sam Weir led all scorers with 26 points, 16 rebounds and six blocks for Point Park, which improved to 11-0 overall. Weir had 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks by halftime, when the Pioneers were ahead, 40-36, after 20 minutes.

KIAC Player of the Week Kayla Kiriau had 18 points and was a perfect 12 for 12 from the free-throw line. Carly Forse and Alexa Xenakis added 12 and 11, respectively.

LaShauna Brothers led La Roche (9-1) with 24 points, nine rebounds and four steals. She had 18 points the first half to keep the Redhawks close.

“I think we played poorly the first half, particularly with our offensive execution,” said Point Park head coach Tony Grenek. “Defensively, we let Brothers do whatever she wanted to the first half. We were fortunate to be ahead by four points. I said at halftime if we came out and played the way we were capable of, we’d have a chance to put them away. We played a strong second half, and things went our way.”

Point Park outrebounded La Roche, 53-43, outscored the Redhawks in the paint, 44-30, and had a 27-8 advantage in second chance points. The Pioneers’ defense held La Roche to 31-percent shooting, which included 2 for 19 from 3-point range.

The Point Park win ended La Roche’s home winning streak, which was at 16 games. Point Park opened up a 68-43 lead with eight minutes remaining and later led, 80-56, with 3:03 to go.

Point Park started the game on a 12-2 run, but La Roche replied with a 14-0 run of its own for a 16-12 advantage. But Weir got going for Point Park as the Pioneers built a 40-26 lead late in the first half. La Roche ended the half on a 10-0 run the last two minutes to get within 40-36 at the break.

Point Park started to pull away in the second half when it built a 50-40 lead with 16:17 left. The Pioneers put a 10-2 run on top of that for a 60-42 advantage at the 12:00 mark.

The lead stayed above 20 points the rest of the way until the final 1:30 when Point Park put its third string on the floor.

La Roche was 24-3 last season. Point Park held Redhawks leading scorer Cassie Cygan to six points although she came in averaging 18.0 points per game. Mackenzie O’Donnell totaled 15 points and nine rebounds for La Roche.

Point Park will face Mount Vernon Nazarene at home Thursday in its last game of the month. The Pioneers won the Nov. 9 match-up between the teams, 85-70, on the road.

Mount Vernon Nazarene is one of only three teams to defeat Point Park at home during head coach Tony Grenek’s time with the Pioneers.
