Point Park tops Daemen, 60-48, in AMC Women's Basketball Tournament Finals

WEST MIFFLIN, Pa. -- NAIA Division II No. 24 Point Park University (23-6) defeated Daemen College, 60-48, in the American Mideast Conference Women's Basketball Tournament Championship Game Saturday night at CCAC-South Gym.

Point Park earns the league's automatic bid the NAIA Division II National Championship March 7-13 in Sioux City, Iowa.It is the first national tournament appearnce for the Pioneers and their first conference tournament title in program history.

The pairings for the 32-team field will be announced the evening of Feb. 29. Daemen (23-7) will have to await a possible at-large bid to nationals, and that will be announced Feb. 29 with final Top 25 poll of the season.

  Point Park led, 35-19 late in the first half and had made 13 of 18 field goals at that point. The Pioneers were up, 35-28, at the half. Daemen made things tight in the early portion of the second half, but the Pioneers extended things to 43-33 with 13:25 left.

The Pioneers still led, 47-37, with 8:10 to go, and then took a commanding lead of 54-37 with 5:15 remaining. Daemen made things interesting with a quick 9-0 run to cut it to 54-46 with 2:40 remaining, but the Pioneers made some key steals late and made some big free throws to keep the Wildcats at bay.

Point Park was up 56-46 with 1:16 remaining after free throws from Emily Schartner and Kristen Beatty. Savisky got a late steal and broke free for a transition layup and a 60-46 lead with under a minute to play.

Emily Schartner led all scorers with 19 points for Point Park. She had 12 at the half and made three early treys to lead the Pioneers' early charge. Point Park made 8 of its first 10 shots and shot 40 percent for the game.

Kristen Beatty added 11 points as the only other Point Park player in double figures. Monica Kosior and Ellie Allen had 14 and 13 points, respectively for Daemen.

Point Park forced 20 turnovers and committed just seven of its own. Daemen won the rebounding, 43-27, but shot only 32.7 percent from the field and 3 of 17 (17.6 percent) from long range. Point Park made 7 of 17 3-pointers (41 percent), including a 5 for 10 performance in the first half.

Point Park got solid contributions form several players with Joncelyn Peterkin posting eight points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals. April Austin tallied nine points, four assists and two steals. Katresa Savisky totaled eight points, four assists and three steals.

Point Park advances to the NAIA Division II National Championship

The AMC Tournament Champion receives the league's lone automatic bid to the NAIA Division II National Tournament at Sioux City, Iowa, March 7-13. National qualifiers and bracket announced Feb. 29.
