Point Park women drop to No. 24 but stayed ranked in NAIA Division II Top 25

Feb. 20, 2012

PITTSBURGH -- The Point Park University women's basketball team dropped two spots but held on to its national ranking at No. 24 in Monday's NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Coaches' Top 25 Poll (Feb. 20).

The Pioneers (21-6, 12-2 AMC) are ranked for the fourth-straight week, and they take a national rating into the American Mideast Conference Tournament. Point Park is the top seed in the four-team event, and it hosts Houghton (14-12, 6-8 AMC) in a a first-round matchup Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. at CCAC-South Gym.

Point Park has occupied each of the last four spots of the Top 25 in the last four weeks. The Pioneers broke in as No. 25 Jan. 31 and moved up to No. 23 Feb. 6 before reaching a high of No. 22 Feb. 13.

The Pioneers fell two spots based on a 67-51 loss at AMC Regular Season Co-Champion Daemen (22-6, 12-2 AMC) on Saturday. The Wildcats are the No. 2 seed in the AMC Tournament and are in 'others receiving votes' section at 28th overall. On Tuesday of last week, Point Park won at Carlow, 66-39.

In the AMC Weekly Conference rankings, which factor into the national rankings, Point Park and Daemen are tied for first in the poll that is conducted by league coaches.

There is one new school to this week's poll, No. 25 Eastern Oregon (22-7). The Mountaineers replaced Grace (Ind.), which went from No. 24 last week to out of the top 30.

There was some movement in spots No. 18-25 as No. 20 College of Idaho (19-8) and No. 23 Saint Mary (Neb.) (21-9) switched places from where they were last week. No. 18 Bethel (Ind.) (20-9) is back three spots from where it was last week, and No. 19 St. Thomas (Fla.) (22-6) fell four spots from the last poll.

The next poll will be announced by the NAIA office on Feb. 29, and it will be the final one before the national tournament. Conference tournaments will be completed by Feb. 28. The Feb. 29 Top 25 Poll will be used to determine the at-large bids to the 21st Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's Basketball Nation Championship March 7-13 in Sioux City, Iowa.

The 32-team national tournament will have 21 automatic bids from conferences, 10-11 at-large bids and one possible host berth. The first 10-11 teams in the Feb. 29 poll that do not otherwise have an automatic bid will be awarded at-large berths.

The winner of the American Mideast Conference Tournament will get the league's lone automatic bid. The AMC Championship Game is Feb. 25 at the site of the highest remaining seed.
