Pioneers beat Midway (Ky.) in First Rd of Rio Grande Tourney, 62-49

RIO GRANDE, Ohio -- The Point Park University women's basketball team beat Midway (Ky.), 62-49, Friday afternoon in the first round of the Bevo Francis Tournament hosted by the University of Rio Grande.

Joncelyn Peterkin, a 6-2 center from West Mifflin, Pa., led the Pioneers (1-1) with 17 points and 10 rebounds in what was the first victory at Point Park for new head coach Tony Grenek.

The Pioneers move on to Saturday's championship game at the event that has long been one of the most anticipated, small-college basketball tournaments in southwestern Ohio. Point Park will face either host Rio Grande or Carlow tomorrow with game times being 11 a.m. or 3 p.m. Rio Grande will play at 3 p.m. win or lose vs. Carlow.

Point Park led winless Midway (0-4), 36-25, at halftime. The Pioneers shot 46 percent (17 of 37) the first half and 42 percent (27 of 65) for the game. Point Park dominated the boards, 43-27, and held Midway to 27-percent shooting (12 of 45).

Newcomer Emily Schartner, a 5-11 guard from Finleyville, Pa., scored 11 points on 5 of 7 field goals. She played two years at NCAA DI NJIT. Also in double figures was returning starter Kristen Beatty, a senior guard who had 10 points on 5 of 9 from the floor.

All 15 of Point Park's players got into the game, and nine of them reached the scoring column. Midway was led by Whitley Henry with 15 points. Midway's ability to stay within 13 points at the final horn was aided by going 18 of 23 from the foul line and knocking down 7 of 20 3-pointers. Conversely, Point Park was just 5 of 10 from the line and 3 of 16 from long range.
