PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University women's basketball alum Joncelyn Peterkin, a 6-2 center from West Mifflin, Pa., averaged a double-double of 11.8 points and a team-high 10.2 rebounds per game during her first year in professional basketball playing for Liepajas Papirs of the Latvian pro league in 2012-13.

Peterkin was the third-leading scorer and starting center for Liepajas Papirs (14-8), which took third place in the LSBL. She also led the club with 1.1 blocks per game and shot 40 percent from the field.

Peterkin played three years at Point Park from 2009-12 after spending her freshman year at Carlow. Her career averages were 8.6 ppg, 6.6 rpg and 2.3 bpg. She holds the school record with 192 career blocked shots.

She was a starter all three years at Point Park and an all-conference player. She helped the Pioneers to their first-ever NAIA Division II national tournament as a senior in 2011-12 as the American Mideast Conference Tournament champions. Peterkin provided a defensive presence down low for a Pioneers' team that ranked second in the country in scoring defense.

"The experience (overseas) was great. and I really believe that has contributed a lot to my play throughout the season," said Peterkin. "My team and I became very close like family. And they made my time there amazing. And all of that made it easier for me on the court. I believe I did well for my first year as a pro, and hopefully I will continue to build on that next season."

Peterkin plans to play overseas again this coming season. As of earlier this summer, she was weighing options of staying with her current team of Liepajas Papirs or signing with another team, perhaps in another league.
