PITTSBURGH -- The Point Park University women's basketball team set a program record for wins in the regular season and continued its dominance over Carlow University with a 57-48, KIAC win over the Celtics on Friday night at Oakland Catholic High School.

Point Park (22-5, 11-4 KIAC) bested last year's mark of 21 wins in the regular season and is just one off the overall team record for wins in a season set last year at 23-7 overall. It was the Pioneers 10th win in a row over Carlow (14-14, 5-10 KIAC), which has lost to Point Park twice a year for the last five years.

The win also guarantees the Pioneers of at least a share of the KIAC Regular Season Title. With its conference schedule complete, Point Park holds a 1.0 game lead over Asbury (Ky.) (9-4 KIAC) for first place in the standings. Asbury can tie the Pioneers are 11-4 with wins in its last two games. A tiebreaker, however, would give Asbury the No. 1 seed in the playoffs in that scenario.

In Friday's win, Ja'Nia McPhatter led Point Park with 19 points and nine rebounds, and Teresa Davis added 15 points and eight rebounds. Emily Schartner scored 14 points on 9-for-11 shooting from the foul line.

Chanel Berry, who had a game-high 21 points off the bench for Carlow, hit a jumper with 1:46 left to pull the Celtics within 49-43. But Davis, who was 6 for 8 from the field, hit a big 3-pointer with 1:19 to go to keep Carlow at bay. Schartner was 4 for 4 from the free-throw line in the final minute to put the game away.

It was a defensive struggle throughout as both teams shot 31 percent overall. Point Park was 4 for 19 from long range, and Carlow made 7 of 20 from outside the arc. The Celtics' outside shooting helped them come back from big deficits in each half.

Point Park got out to a 12-4 lead on Davis' jumper at the 14:04 mark of the first half. But Carlow responded with a 16-2 run that was capped off by one of Lynzi Mueller's three 3-pointers. That put Carlow ahead, 20-14, but Point Park followed with a 16-4 run of its own to take a 30-24 lead into the half.

The Pioneers built second-half leads of 40-29 (12:46) and 46-32 (8:10) before Carlow made it a game late. Point Park swept the season series, which included a 69-52 home win Jan. 22.

April Austin added eight points and five assists for the Pioneers, and Katresa Savisky had a game-high 14 rebounds. Austin now has 1,205 career points. That figure is 9th in school history, and it is right behind Ashley Henderson in 8th place at 1,209. Austin passed Brittney Wilson (1,191) in the last game.

Point Park finishes the regular season Saturday (Feb. 16) at non-conference WVU Tech (2 p.m.). The Pioneers beat the Golden Bears, 66-54, at home Jan. 26. A win would tie the team record for wins.
