PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University sophomore point guard Kelly Johnson had two monster games last week to pick up Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week honors for the week of Feb. 2-8, 2015, the conference announced on Monday.
The 5-8 product of Mt. Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh, Pa., averaged 32.0 points, 8.0 assists, 6.5 steals and 5.5 rebounds per game in two games last week for the Pioneers (21-3, 8-2 KIAC). She shot 63 percent from the field and 55 percent from 3-point range (5 for 9).
Johnson eclipsed 30 points in both games on the week, the first of which was a career-high 33 points alongside six assists and six steals in a 75-64 win at Carlow Feb. 3. She knocked down four treys as well.
Johnson had a superb, all-around performance in the 103-79 victory at IU East on Feb. 8 as she nearly hit for a quadruple-double. Johnson had 31 points, 10 assists, eight rebounds and seven steals that game.
A transfer this year from NCAA Division II Clarion, Johnson leads Point Park with 17.5 ppg, 4.4 apg and 3.8 spg. She leads the KIAC and is fourth in NAIA Division II in steals per game. She also ranks sixth in the KIAC in scoring and fourth in assists.
Johnson has upped her game the last month as her averages for the last 10 games are 21.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 4.3 apg, 4.5 spg. The Pioneers are 9-1 overall and 7-1 KIAC in those games.
Point Park returns to action Tuesday night at home versus KIAC North Division leader Rio Grande (20-6, 9-1 KIAC), which holds a half-game lead over the Pioneers for first place. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. at CCAC-South Gym.
