PITTSBURGH -- No. 24 Point Park University's Samantha Weir has been named the KIAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week Dec. 2-8 for her big performance in the showdown with conference co-favorite Alice Lloyd (Ky.) on Dec. 7.
Weir, a 6-0, freshman center from Ellwood City, Pa., and Riverside High School, had 31 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks in the 91-84 home win over Alice Lloyd (Ky.). Point Park and Alice Lloyd were picked tied for first in the KIAC preseason poll.
Weir made 10 of 16 field goals and 11 of 13 free throws versus Alice Lloyd. She had 17 points the first half to give the Pioneers a 52-41 lead at the break. Her 3-point play with 3:20 left gave the Pioeners an 83-75 lead after the Eagles had cut a double-digit lead down to five.
It is the second time this year that Weir is the KIAC Player of the Week, and it is the third time in the six weeks that it has been given out this year that a player from Point Park (9-0, 1-0 KIAC) got the award.
Weir has five double-doubles in nine games, and she leads Point Park in scoring and rebounding at 14.8 ppg and 10.1 rpg. She ranks third in the country with 3.11 blocks per game with a total of 28 on the year. Weir's 10.1 rebounds per game are 13th in NAIA Division II, and she is 15th in the nation in field-goal percentage at .570.
Weir and the Pioneers are off this week for finals before getting back into KIAC play this Saturday, Dec. 14 at home versus Brescia (Ky.). Game time is 1 p.m. at CCAC-South Gym.
Point Park is one of four remaining undefeated teams in NAIA Division II, and was ranked No. 24 in last week's Top 25 Poll. The next rankings come out today (Dec. 10).
