PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Point Park University cracked the NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll released Tuesday (Dec. 3) by the national office. The undefeated Pioneers (8-0) are ranked No. 24 in the first national rankings of the regular season.
Point Park, which was among the ‘others receiving votes’ teams in the preseason rankings, is one of five remaining undefeated teams in NAIA Division II women’s basketball. Others are No. 1 Indiana Wesleyan (8-0), No. 2 St. Francis (Ind.) (10-0), No. 3 Northwestern (Iowa) (10-0) and No. 16 Oregon Tech (9-0).
The Pioneers earned mention in the Top 25 for the seventh time in program history. They were ranked for each of the last six polls of the 2011-12 season, and they cracked the Top 25 for the first time in team history on Jan. 30, 2012.
"It's only December 3, and we haven't played a conference game yet," Point Park head coach Tony Grenek said. "It's nice to be ranked, but we don't put a whole lot of stock in the rankings. All I know is that we need to get much better as a basketball team as the season progresses. We have a lot of areas where we need to improve upon."
Point Park will try to improve to 9-0 in its next game, at home Thursday in a rematch against Wilberforce. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at CCAC-South Gym. The Pioneers’ last game was a 77-68 win at Wilberforce Nov. 25. The 8-0 start is the best one in school history.
Point Park ranks highly in many statistical categories of NAIA Division II, particularly in the areas of defense and rebounding. The Pioneers rank third in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (18.5), fourth in total rebounds per game (48.1), fifth in blocks per game (4.9), sixth in steals per game (13.6), sixth in field-goal percentage defense (.341) and seventh in turnover margin (+7.3).
Offensively, Point Park ranks 21st in the country in scoring margin at +14.5 points per game and has the 22nd-ranked scoring offense in NAIA Division II at 79.3 points per game.
The Pioneers are in the Top 25 for the first time since the being No. 21 on March 19, 2012, the final ranking of the 2011-12 season. Point Park is 33-7 (.825) since the last time it was ranked as one of the national leaders in victories since then. Point Park is 56-14 (.800) since the start of the 2011-12 season.
Point Park is the first KIAC team to be in the Top 25 since Indiana Southeast was No. 25 on Feb. 29, 2012. The KIAC did not have any ranked teams for the entire 2012-13 season, Point Park’s first year in the conference.
The Pioneers were rated No. 39 overall and in the 'others receiving votes' section of the preseason Top 25 poll this season.
