Point Park women open fall schedule with 2nd-place finish at Ursuline
Sept. 12, 2011
CHESTERLAND, Ohio -- The Point Park University women's golf team began its third year of intercollegiate competition Monday at the Ursuline College Invitational, and the Pioneers shot their best scores ever.
Point Park placed 2nd of 3 teams at the 18-hole event at Bershire Golf Club, and the Pioneers' team score of 408 was by far their best score in the short history of the program. Their previous best was 497 last year at Notre Dame.
Host Ursuline took first place with a 394, and Indiana University-East was third at 420.
Three players shot better scores than had ever been done in team history. Leading the performance was freshman Caroline Collins with a 91. The freshman from West Middlesex, Pa., and Kennedy Catholic High School shot 47 on the front and 44 on the back.
Lauren Martauz, a freshman from Youngstown, Ohio, and Ursuline High School, shot a 100, and Chloe Callison, from Dayton, Ohio, with a 102 were the other two players who went lower than had ever been done for the Pioneers.
Ashley Funkhouse, a sophomore from Pleasant Hills, Pa., and Rilyn Gancia, a freshman from Monroeville, Pa., rounded out the team score by shooting, 115 and 122, respectively.
The conditions were very wet, which led to high scores. There was very little roll on the fairways, which made the course play extremely long.
Point Park is in action next Monday, Sept. 19 at the St. Vincent Invitational held at Glengarry Golf Links.
