Pioneers lose AMC opener at Mt. Vernon Nazarene, 2-0
Sept. 10, 2009
MT. VERNON, Ohio - The Point Park women's soccer team and Mt. Vernon Nazarene played to a scoreless tie at halftime of Thursday's American Mideast Conference opener for both teams. But Mt. Vernon Nazarene scored twice in the second half on its way to a 2-0 victory.
Point Park (1-2 overall, 0-1 AMC) was outshot, 24-7, but neither team scored for the first 61 minutes.
The Pioneers' defense and goalkeeper Liz Velez (Erie/General McLane) did their best to hold off Mt. Vernon Nazarene (1-2, 0-1), but the Cougars got on the board with Courtney Ricker's goal at the 61:29 mark.
Velez made 12 saves, which is one shy of the career high she set in the season opener. The sophomore from Erie made 10 saves in the second half as Mt. Vernon Nazarene's offense came alive after halftime.
Four minutes after Ricker's goal, Haley Sparks gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead when she hammered home a rebound after a shot by Rickers.
Point Park was shut out for the first time this season but was not without its scoring chances.
With the score 0-0 early in the second half, the Pioneers had their best scoring opportunity when a free kick by Jo Jo Altebrando (Montoursville/Montoursville) struck the cross bar. Point Park's Angela Olivieri (Edinboro/General Mclane) got a head on the rebound, but her shot hit the cross bar, as well.
Mt. Vernon Nazarene held an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Point Park continues AMC play Saturday by playing host to Daemen at Founders Field. Game time is 2 p.m.
