CHESWICK, Pa. – Mount Vernon Nazarene University had its lone goal stand up in a 1-0 victory over Point Park University in an American Mideast Conference women’s soccer game Tuesday at Founders Field.
Pictured: Lauren Vernail (center) and the Point Park defense withstood 17 shots, but gave up only one goal to Mt. Vernon Nazarene.
Jessica Estep scored the game’s only goal in the 67th minute to give Mt. Vernon Nazarene (9-4 overall, 4-3 AMC) the win over host Point Park (2-11, 0-8 AMC).
Point Park goalkeeper Anna Shaw (Mingo Junction, Ohio/Steubenville Catholic Central) faced 17 shots, but still only gave up the one goal. Shaw, a freshman, made eight saves, and she made several big stops to keep the game scoreless and later to keep the Pioneers within a goal.
Mt. Vernon Nazarene, which is battling for the final playoff spot in the AMC, held a 17-5 advantage in shots.
Perhaps Point Park’s best scoring opportunity came late in the game when forward Colleen Poploski (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) missed a chance to tie it up when her curving shot sailed right of the goal.
Point Park returns to action Thursday by playing host to NAIA non-conference opponent WV Tech. Kickoff is 4 p.m. at Founders Field.
