PITTSBURGH – Point Park University women’s soccer got a commitment from Angelique Abel, an all-state defender out of Baltimore, Md., announced head coach Mark Platts. Abel, a graduate of Kenwood High School, will join the Pioneers as a freshman in the fall of 2011.
Abel, a 5-5 defender, earned honorable mention all-state honors as a senior at Kenwood. She was a two-time all-county and all-division player and was a team captain the last two years. Abel earned four letters in soccer and three each in track and field and lacrosse.
“Angie is a hard working defender who joins us from Maryland,” said Platts, who will begin his second season as head coach this fall. “She will compete for a defensive role and offer much depth in our back line. She has a great personality and will fit in well with the team and the style of play.
“She is very athletic after playing three sports throughout high school and offers leadership that she has gained through captaining both soccer and lacrosse. I look forward to working with her during her college career and have high hopes for her on- and off-the-field success.”
Point Park opens its preseason conditioning on campus in mid-August before beginning the season Aug. 25 at San Diego Christian (CA). That season opener is part of a two-game, West-coast swing that includes a meeting at California State-San Marcos on Aug. 27.
Point Park University, located in downtown Pittsburgh, is a member of the NAIA and the American Mideast Conference.
