PITTSBURGH -- Point Park University's Katie Guarnaccia and Vianka Cotton have repeated as the KIAC Women's Outdoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week, announced the conference office on Monday (April 13).
Guarnaccia, a distance runner, was named the top track athlete in the conference for the second time this season while Cotton, a jumper, did the same as the top field athlete in the KIAC this past week.
A freshman from North Allegheny High School, Guarnaccia further established herself as the front runner in KIAC distance events by winning the 1,500 and 5,000 meters at the Westminster Invitational last Saturday, April 11.
Guarnaccia set school records in both events. She won the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:58, which ranks in the Top 20 of the NAIA this year. That time won the event by 46 seconds. In the 1,500 meters, Guarnaccia posted a time of 4:58 to win by five seconds.
Cotton, who is new to the sport of track & field after finishing up her basketball career at Point Park, placed third in the triple jump to highlight her performance at Westminster. A native of New Hill, N.C., Cotton broke her own school record with a leap of 10.43 meters in the triple jump. She also competed in long jump with a mark of 4.06 meters to place 19th.
The next competition for the Pioneers is April 18 at the Slippery Rock Invitational. It is the last event before the KIAC Championship Meet April 24-25 at Rio Grande.
