CDC Publishes Paper by NSET Instructors on Efficacy of Respirators with Surgical Masks

Thursday, March 21, 2013

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently published a paper by Edward J. Sinkule, Ph.D., and Jeffrey Powell, adjunct instructors for Point Park University’s Department of Natural Sciences and Engineering Technology, on the effectiveness of using filtering facepiece respirators with surgical masks as a strategy for health care workers to avoid surface contamination.

Sinkule and Powell's paper titled “Evaluation of N95 respirator use with a surgical mask cover: effects on breathing resistance and inhaled carbon dioxide,” was featured as a "Top 10 Article of the Week" in the CDC’s Science Clips publication.

“The learning opportunity brought by CDC scientists to the classrooms of Point Park University is a valuable research-to-practice tool for teaching students. Point Park students receive the scientific methods and knowledge brought by the faculty that conduct research at the CDC laboratories, which are located at the former Bureau of Mines location in South Park," remarked Sinkule.
