Student Health Services

The Student Health Center at Point Park University

A primary concern of Point Park University is the health and psychological well-being of its students. To ensure students' health needs are met, the University has contracted with a hospital-affiliated medical facility to provide comprehensive medical and psychological counseling services to Point Park University students.

Services

At Point Park, all students may receive care through the Student Health Center.  The Student Health Center provides first aid intervention, illness and injury assessment, starter doses of over-the-counter medication, health screenings (e.g., blood pressure checks, height and weight measurements), community health referrals, physician appointments, and health education resource materials.

Through the Student Health Center, students are also eligible for physician office visits at no charge. Costs for additional services, such as x-rays and laboratory testing, are the responsibility of the student.

The Student Health Center is dedicated to helping students achieve and maintain a healthier lifestyle, and sponsors a variety of health and wellness programs throughout the year. These programs recognize and address the changing health care needs and concerns of the University community.

Student Health Records

All students must have a completed Student Health Record (PDF), including complete immunization documentation, on file in the Student Health Center.  Failure to submit a completed Student Health Record with proper immunization documentation may result in the student's inability to register for classes.

The staff of the University's Student Health Center is bound by the medical ethics of confidentiality. Information provided will not be released to a third party, including parents, without the student's written authorization, unless legally required or permitted.

Health Insurance

Students are strongly urged to maintain health insurance coverage.  The University's student health insurance plan brochure (PDF) is available in the Student Health Center, the Office of Student Affairs, or online at the UPMC Health Plan website.  Additionally, each summer the brochure is mailed to all registered students.

All full-time, registered students are eligible to participate in the University's student health plan.  Residential, international, dance, and theater students, and student athletes (including cheerleading), must carry the University's student health insurance unless they have existing health insurance coverage; in this case, a Student Health Plan Declination/Waiver Form (PDF) must be completed and submitted, along with proof of insurance, to the Office of Student Affairs, or the student will be automatically enrolled in the University's student health plan.

Billing and payment of premiums for the University's student health plan are handled directly through UPMC.

For the fall 2011 semester, the deadline in which to enroll in the plan, or waive coverage, is September 15, 2011; for the spring 2012 semester, the deadline is January 31, 2012.

For more information, contact the Office of Student Affairs, the Student Health Center, or UPMC at 1-888-876-2756.

In order to provide optimal care to student athletes and performing artists, the University has purchased an athletic and performing arts accident insurance policy. This policy provides secondary insurance coverage for accidents incurred while participating in official University-sponsored athletic or performing arts events. Insurance coverage will not be provided for pre-existing conditions or non-athletic/performing arts-related injuries.  Information on this coverage is available in the Athletic Training Office located on the first floor of the Student Center.
