Residence Hall FAQs

Q: What types of safety and security measures are provided for campus residents?

A: Security maintains a continuous service on campus and can be reached 24-hours a day. Campus Life staff members are trained to deal with emergency situations. Fire alarm systems and smoke detectors exist in all rooms to ensure the safety of residents. Community Facilitators are on duty nightly.

Q: Are the belongings of residents insured by the University?

A: The University does not insure personal belongings and does not assume liability for theft or damage. Parents' homeowner's insurance policy may be able to provide residents with insurance coverage.

Q: What does a resident do if he/she loses his/her room key?

A: The resident should either call or go to the Office of Campus Life to request a lock change. After office hours, the resident should contact Key Managers. The resident will be charged $55 for a lock change.

Q: What happens if a resident loses his/her ID card?

A: The ID gives a student the right to enter the building and their respective residence hall floor (if they are a resident), use the Residential Dining Facility and to remove books from the library. Any student who loses an ID card must go to the Student Services Office (located on the first floor of Thayer Hall) to obtain a new card. There is a $25 charge for a new ID card.

Q: What can be done if a resident is unhappy with his/her room assignment and/or roommate?

A: If the resident is unhappy with his/her room assignment and/or roommate, he/she may request a room change. The resident should contact his/her Community Facilitator for assistance.

Q: Is a student resident required to be on a meal plan?

A: Yes. All students residing in Thayer or Lawrence Hall must purchase a meal plan.

Q: What types of residential living spaces are there?

A: We have single, double and triple rooms; female only, co-ed, and living and learning community floors, as well as suite/apartment style living.

Q: What is a common area?

A: A common area is defined as an area in a residence hall which is not being used for living quarters, offices, etc. Such areas include: hallways, bathrooms, lobbies, lounges, stairwells and laundry rooms.

Q: What is a guest/visitor?

A: A guest is defined as anyone who does not live in the residence halls. (including commuter students)

Q: Is a resident permitted to have guests?

A: Yes. (Referrer to the Pioneer Guide for Guest Policy)

Q: What are the sizes of the mattresses in the room?

A: The mattresses are the typical twin bed size. The actual size is 35 x 75 inches. Boulevard Apartment numbers that end in 00,01,02,and 03 have extra-long twin bed size.

Q: Is there telephone service and computer service in each room? What are the restrictions involved?

A: There is no phone service in the residence halls. Residents must have a cell phone.  Every room is equipped with one (1) Ethernet port per resident for connection to the University network.

Q: May residents cook in their rooms?

A: No, cooking is not permitted in the residence halls. Appliances of any type are not permitted. (Excluding Pioneer/Conestoga Suites and the Boulevard Apartments)

Q: Is the resident allowed to paint or make repairs to his/her room?

A: No. Students are not permitted to paint or make repairs and/or improvements to their rooms that cause permanent damage.

Q: Who will clean the student's room?

A: Students are expected to clean their own rooms. The Office of Campus Life has vacuums, brooms, dust pans, mops and buckets for residents' use. Housekeeping will attend to the public areas and community bathrooms.

Q: What are the measurements of the windows?

A: Lawrence Hall windows are 48 x 72 inches. (Mini-blinds are provided.)

Q: Can residents keep firearms and other such weapons in their rooms?

A: No. Objects with potential to cause bodily harm to residents are not allowed in the residence halls. Such objects include but are not limited to: fireworks, explosives, BB guns, shotguns, stun guns, knives, bows and arrows, various martial arts weapons and box cutters.
