Why did you choose Point Park for your M.B.A. degree?
I chose Point Park because of the accelerated evening and weekend classes offered in the M.B.A. program and the central location of the campus. At the time, I was working for the Pittsburgh Penguins and the convenience of this program fit well with my career.
How did you land your position at Madison Square Garden?
Every interaction, whether in the classroom or in the business world, is a chance to make a critical impression. I happened to cross paths with a NYC sports marketing executive at Game 7 of the Penguins-Red Wings Stanley Cup Final in ’09; I kept in contact and he became an unbelievable mentor for me and helped open doors to several New York area sports teams. Madison Square Garden was ultimately the perfect fit since they were just beginning to undergo a billion dollar transformation — which presented not only a great career growth opportunity, but also a chance to be a part of a new era in MSG history.
What are your key responsibilities in that role?
Overall, my job consists of working with a small sales team whose goal is to generate suite revenue by selling long-term lease partnerships to major corporations within the Greater New York City region. With the addition of nearly 80 new suites, it is my responsibility to identify prospective buyers, develop and pitch tailored presentations to C-level executives, and cultivate new and existing business relationships with our suite client base.
In what ways has your M.B.A. degree helped you in your position?
Because Point Park’s M.B.A. program encourages hands-on experience outside of a classroom setting, I had the opportunity to work with various sports and entertainment leaders who exposed me to real business situations. One project, for example, involved analyzing a local business' weaknesses and devising a comprehensive marketing plan that strategically aligned with their short and long-term goals (the company later implemented a large portion of our plan). Having has the opportunity to confidently interact with the business world and collaborate with Point Park professors, while further developing leadership skills, has greatly helped me in my career.
My M.B.A. has also increased my marketability across the sports industry; I strongly feel that an advanced education makes a person stand out from a crowd of candidates in today’s competitive workforce. Education frequently comes up in my business conversations; being able to say I have an M.B.A. has enhanced my credibility and has definitely garnered respect from corporate clients that I speak to on a daily basis.
Why do you recommend going to graduate school?
Graduate school helps you develop skills outside of your comfort zone and beyond what you’ve learned in your undergraduate studies. It provides a platform for connecting you with influential business leaders and interacting with professors who have a pulse on the marketplace. My advice for students when they enroll is to seek out mentors and the advice they have for you. Be proactive and open to networking with their networks. Get involved — the people who you meet along the way are often the ones who will help you advance in your career.
