Point Park University athletic teams have been grabbing lots of headlines in recent months. The Pioneers compete in 11 varsity sports in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Keep up with the Pioneers at their website

To get you up to speed, here are some of the highlights of this school year to date:
• In August 2011, Point Park athletics launched a new, exciting
brand identity to represent the Pioneers. The new brand logo image depicts the school’s Bison mascot, the Pittsburgh skyline and the nickname Pioneers.
• The
volleyball team went to the NAIA national tournament and won the American Mideast Conference. Both of those accomplishments were firsts for the program. The Pioneers set a record for wins with a 36-6 record.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette• The
men’s soccer team tied a school record for wins with a 12-5-1 record and reached the finals of the American Mideast Conference playoff tournament. It was the first time ever that the Pioneers were in the AMC playoffs.
• The
women’s basketball team was 20-5 overall as of Feb. 13. The Pioneers set a school record for wins and earned the No. 1 seed in the AMC Tournament to put themselves just a couple of wins away from the national tournament.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette• The
men’s basketball team has qualified for the AMC Tournament and had a record of 13-10 as of Feb. 13. The Pioneers lead the nation in scoring at 90.0 ppg and had a couple of their players – brothers T.J. and Robbie Heatherington – featured on
KDKA-TV Sports.
• In December, 24 Point Park
student-athletes were inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society Point Park Rho Chapter. Juniors and seniors with a 3.4 GPA or higher were eligible for this recognition, and graduating seniors will wear special, honors cords at the May 5 commencement ceremony.
