Point Park holding 'Day of Dreams' for Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Classes are in session

Point Park's Honors Student Organization and Black Student Union have collaborated with the Office of the Provost to host a "Day of Dreams" on Monday, Jan. 18, to celebrate and honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The University is maintaining a normal class schedule on Jan. 18.

All Day of Dreams observances will be held in the lobby of Lawrence Hall.

Speakers and events

  • 9:30 a.m. -- breakfast
  • 10 - 11 a.m. -- Richard Adams, special assistant to the president for diversity and equity at the Community College of Allegheny County, will describe the effectiveness of diversity in education.

  • 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. -- Sala Udin, president of the Coro Center for Civic Leadership, will discuss his involvement during the civil rights movement.

  • 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. -- A "poverty luncheon" of soup and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches will be served, sponsored by Aramark. Small donations are encouraged and will benefit NEED, a Pittsburgh-based organization that provides scholarships to help further minority education.
  • 1:30-2:30 p.m. -- State Rep. Jake Wheatley will address the continued importance of the civil rights movement in American politics.
  • 5:30 p.m. -- Networking social to support the effort of connecting people through food and fellowship. Light hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be served.
  • 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. -- Marsha Ellis Jones, senior vice president and chief diversity officer for PNC Financial Services, will speak on the importance of multicultural diversity and inclusion.

 
Activities throughout the day

  • Members of the University community are invited to write their dreams for the future on a "Wall of Dreams."
  • WPPJ, the campus radio station, will air speeches by Dr. King.
  • The library will have resources about diversity and the civil rights movement.
