Tim Hudson, Ph.D., dean and professor, and Dane S. Claussen, Ph.D., professor & director of graduate programs and faculty development, both in the School of Communication at Point Park University, spoke at the 2nd World Journalism Education Congress, held July 5-7 at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa.

In a panel session called, "Changing Models, Shifting Foundations: Economic and Management Issues in the New Media Curriculum," Dr. Hudson made a presentation called, "Media Production Competencies for the Versatile 21st Century Journalist." In the presentation, he outlined a technologically updated bachelor's degree curriculum that would meet U.S. journalism accreditation requirements as well as the international journalism curricular standards developed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Other panelists were Greg Newton, Associate Director for Media Studies, School of Media Arts & Sciences, Ohio University; Greg Pitts, Chair, Department of Communications, University of North Alabama; and Glenda Williams, Coordinator of Undergraduate Studies, Department of Telecommunications & Film, University of Alabama.

In a separate session, Dr. Claussen presented a paper, "How U.S. Public Relations Education Leads the World, and Why That's Still Not Good Enough." The paper showed how almost no U.S. bachelor's degree and master's degree programs in public relations are requiring or allowing their students to take more than one (if any) business or economics course, despite two joint academic-industry (via Public Relations Society of America) studies calling for PR students to study business and economics. He also discussed reasons why this is the case, and what would need to change to solve the problem.

Dr. Claussen was the designated Discussant for a group of research papers in a session titled, "Chinese Experiences," and-in yet a different session-presented for its author, Yulia Medvedeva of Russia (who could not attend the Congress), the paper, "Developing Organizational Ethics Codes in Media Outlets."

Dr. Claussen, who is Editor of the international, refereed, quarterly Journalism & Mass Communication Educator for the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication (AEJMC), also participated in the Journal Editors' Roundtable at the Congress. Roundtable participants, among other decisions, agreed to establish a global email network of scholarly journal editors in journalism, mass communication, media studies, etc.

In July, Dr. Claussen also attended the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) conference at the University of Minho, Braga, Portugal, on behalf of the Journalism & Mass Communication Educator journal and AEJMC.
