Point Park Trustee Named Chair of State Board of Education

Monday, January 08, 2018

Karen Farmer White, a member of the Point Park University Board of Trustees, was appointed chair of the State Board of Education.

Gov. Tom Wolf appointed Farmer White in December, making her the first African-American chair of the board.

Farmer White has been instrumental in advancing educational equity and access in Pennsylvania, including significant components of the state's academic standards.

"Karen Farmer White is one of Pennsylvania's most respected educational leaders and I look forward to her contributions to the board as we continue to make progress to ensure our young people are career-ready to become the leaders of tomorrow," Wolf said in a news release.

The State Board works closely with the Department of Education, state officials and educators to review, develop and adopt policies that govern basic and higher education in Pennsylvania.

Farmer White has served two terms on the State Board of Education and the board's Council of Basic Education.
