Using Words to Work Things Out

  • Objectives:

     

    Condition:

    Given the students the appropriate materials, and after reading the book "Hands Are Not Made For Hitting", and playing the game, the students will be able to use the proper words in order to solve their problems and work things out.

     

    Performance:

    Activity 1: Read the book

      • The students will be able to listen to the story Hands Are Not For Hitting and will be able to understand that there are other ways to work their problems out by using kind words.

    Activity 2: Playing the game

      • The students will be able to play a human board game using their counting skills, reading skills, acting skills, and singing skills.

    Activity 3: Making the masks

      • The students will be able to express themselves by creating an emotion mask and will then be able to explain why they made that mask to the class.

     

    Modifications:

     

      • If a child has a vision problem, make sure they are seated closest to the teacher during reading time and any kind of instruction.
      • Any behavior problems will be addressed immediately at the specific time.

    Materials:

    • Hands are not used for hitting!
    • Carpet
    • Human Game Board - consisting of poster board decorations of Feelings Forest, Peace Place, Listening Lake, Keep Out Cabin, Camp Kindness, and Anger Mountain.
    • Direction for game
    • Scenario game cards
    • 1 large die - Use the #'s 1, 2, & 3 on three of the sides, and have 2 smile faces on two sides, and a star on the 6th side.
    • Puppets
    • Paper Plates
    • Markers
    • Popsicle Sticks
    • Yarn
    • Glue Sticks
    • Camera with film
    • Tape
    • Gift bags

     

    Procedure/Game Directions:

    1. The teachers will begin the lesson by welcoming the students to the classroom and going over the classroom rules.
    2. The teachers will then introduce the lesson "Using Words to Work Things Out" and will describe the activities they will be doing.
    3. When entering the classroom the students will be instructed to walk quietly to the rug and choose an animal to sit on.
    4. The teacher will then review the classroom rules to the students.
    5. The teacher will read the book "Hands are Not Made for Hitting" by ...............
    6. The students will listen to the story while interacting when the teacher prompts them to do so.
    7. The teacher will ask the students to relate this book to their own life experiences.
    8. There will be a brief discussion about using words to work out your problems.

     

    Directions for Game:

    1. Decide who gets goes first.
    2. The student will roll the die, and go that many spaces.
    3. If the student rolls and gets a smile face, they have to act out a scenario with a partner of their choice
    4. If the student rolls and gets the star, then they get to choose weather they want to move up more spaces, or act out a scenario.
    5. Each child keeps going until one of them reaches the finish mark.
    6. The students will be asked to hop like a bunny over to the "human game board".
    7. The students will then be told to hop like a bunny over to the art table where the children will be able to make their own facemasks.
    8. The children will write their names on the back of the masks.
    9. The teacher will then help them glue the popsicle stick on the back of the mask.
    10. The students will then be able to explain to their classmates what kind of emotion mask they chose to make and why.
    11. The students will be told to line up at the door, and as they do so, they will receive their gift bags for being kind students.

     

    Evaluation

    1. The students will be evaluated on how well they worked together during the game, how well they handled their scenarios they were given during the game, and on their use of positive and kind words throughout the entire lesson.
    2. To close the lesson the teacher will review with the students on ways that they can use their words to work things out.
