A Special Interest Group of the American Psychological Association's Division 32, Humanistic Psychology

Always fighting apathy!

Confluence is an undergraduate humanistic psychology alliance that offers a place for multiplicity and diversity of thought, community, friendship and pro-action/activist outreach. It is open to all majors – all those interested in the psychological life of fiction, film, dance, politics, music, philosophy and everything else under the sun. Confluence members are unapologetic about their intellectual pursuits and unabashedly passionate!

Point Park University is located in Downtown Pittsburgh near the confluence of three rivers (Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers). Confluence means "with flow" or "streaming together" and describes both a place as well as continuous change. As streams come together they are momentarily both individual and undivided; they are never static, never simply one or many. The interstice of self with others within the university is the point of confluence. And so, we imagine all students as temporary points of confluence drawn to learn, engage, relate and change.

Confluence is not a club, but a student alliance with the Department of Psychology's distinctive orientation and faculty. It is funded by the department and has its own office in the Department of Psychology.

Confluence embraces the belief in interparticipatory and interdisciplinary experiences and exchanges. Confluence imagines all students as themselves points of confluence – drawn to learn, engage, relate and change.

Confluence Psychology Committees

Committee volunteers are responsible for creative dissemination of advertising (flyers, emails, website creation, U-View) and in general active and regular promotion of the Confluence Alliance. Also, for active enrollment of new members for the continued life of Confluence, it is expected that this committee will actively seek out new members, especially first-year students.

For Confluence, "entertainment" means books (reading groups), films, lectures, guest speakers on career development and special event outings such as lectures, conferences, concerts and outdoor events. This committee is expected to generate all of the above by investigating and pursuing possibilities.

Confluence intends to participate and support many of Point Park University's interests, ventures and events. Part of this involvement will most certainly include other campus organizations and clubs. This committee will seek out such involvement, report on it and help generate member participation. Additionally, Confluence intends to reach out and support the community by volunteer opportunities to help those in need.

This committee will provide ongoing information and support to the rest of Confluence regarding potential graduate schools, Graduate Record Examinations, internship sites and experience. The committee will also gather information regarding practical career development, job fairs and networking opportunities in the local community and at large.

All of the above will require money! So, this committee will actively seek ways to generate finances to support Confluence and facilitate all members to take part in and support fundraising enterprises.
