OWENSBORO, Ky. -- For the second time in as many days on its KIAC, weekend road trip the Point Park University men's basketball team found itself trailing by a wide margin in the second half. And once again, the Pioneers put together a big comeback only to fall short in the end, this time in overtime.
Point Park lost at Brescia (Ky.), 94-93, in overtime in a KIAC game Saturday (Dec. 1). The Pioneers drop to 5-4 overall and 1-2 KIAC although they did well to turn the 44-27 halftime deficit into a 76-76 tie at the end of regulation.
Brescia (3-6, 1-0 KIAC) escaped with the victory by a single point, and the 94 they put up were way more than the 58.0 ppg they were averaging coming in. The Bearcats were nearly at their average after the first 20 minutes, and Point Park's 27 first-half points were the fewest in any half this year for the high-scoring Pioneers.
Senior point guard T.J. Heatherington led Point Park with 32 points. Freshman forward Matt Noszka totaled 19 points before fouling out with five minutes in regulation. Junior guard Gabe McNeal added 12 points to lead a Point Park bench that outscored Brescia's, 29-6.
The starters did the work for Brescia as the Bearcats' five totaled 88 of the 94 points. Guard Hunter Rowe led the way with 24 followed by 6-5 center Brett Jackson with 22. Myron Christian, a 6-6 forward, added 17. Troy Halcomb and Jermain Langley added 14 and 11 respectively.
Point Park trailed Brescia, 21-6, after eight minutes, and the Bearcats maintained a near-20 point lead the rest of the first half. Facing the 44-27 deficit at the break, Point Park responded with a 15-4 run to get it down to 48-42 at the 13:06 mark.
The Pioneers were still down by eight, 69-61, with under five minutes to go. But Heatherington's 3-pointer capped a 12-3 Point Park run to give the Pioneers their first lead of 73-72 with 2:03 remaining.
Point Park's Asa Braxton hit another clutch trey as his long bomb put Point Park up, 76-75 with a minute to go. But Brescia got a free throw to force overtime.
Point Park managed an 85-84 lead with 1:45 left in the OT but found itself down 94-91 on its last possession. With the ball as the clock ticked down, the Pioneers got a layup just before the buzzer to lose by one.
Point Park opened the weekend with a 96-91 loss at NAIA DII #11 IU Southeast. The Pioneers made it close late but could not overcome the 21-point deficit they dug for themselves. IU Southeast led 69-48 with 14:15 to go.
Point Park takes a break until Dec. 17 when it hosts Asbury (Ky.) for a KIAC game at CCAC-South (8 p.m.). The Pioneers will welcome the home court, where they are 3-0. Point Park is 0-4 on the road (2-0 neutral courts). Point Park's current, three-game losing streak is all on the road.
