CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- The Point Park University men's soccer team started its season with a 3-1 loss at WV Tech on Sunday. The Pioneers (0-1) were behind, 1-0, at halftime, and their only goal of the game came on a penalty kick by Francis Tabi (Kumasi, Ghana) in the second half.
WV Tech (2-2) was playing its fourth game of the season and tacked on two more goals after halftime.
"We had a lot of chances in both halves, but could not score," said Point Park's sixth-year head coach Jeroen Walstra. "We did some poor defending also."
The Pioneers return 7 of 11 starters from last year's team that was 12-5-1 overall. Of those four starters missing, two were defenders and another was a defensive midfielder. The defensive unit has experienced some preseason injuries this year, and it will gain full health soon.
Point Park's next game will be Wednesday at Roberts Wesleyan (N.Y.). The Pioneers will play six of their first seven games on the road.
