PITTSBURGH -- The Point Park University women's soccer team opened Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Friday night at Highmark Stadium with a 3-0 victory over Berea (Ky.) College.
The Pioneers (2-4, 1-0 KIAC) put an end to a two-game losing streak, scored a season-high three goals and got their first shutout of the year.
Another first for Point Park came when Kari Kowalski gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute. The goal, which came off a corner kick taken by Alyson Joyce, was the first goal Point Park scored in the first half all year.
With the 1-0 lead in the locker room, Point Park made it a 3-0 win with two goals by Megan Kuntz in the second half. Kuntz scored in the 72nd and 76th minutes each time taking an assist from Emily Levier.
Point Park had complete control of the game with a 26-1 advantage in shots. The Pioneers found the best defense to be a good offense as their possession of the ball left little time for Berea to get anything going.
Point Park goalkeeper Lauren Finkbeiner, a junior, got her first career start and earned the shutout in 90 minutes. She made one save.
The Pioneers are only halfway done with their KIAC home schedule this weekend as they host Midway (Ky.) for another conference game Saturday at 12 p.m. Admission is Free at Highmark Stadium. Midway (1-2, 0-1 KIAC) lost to Carlow, 4-1, Thursday night at Highmark Stadium.
