PROGRAM -June 25-June 29 (5 Day Workshop)

From video games, to super hero films such as The Avengers, to animated films by Pixar and DreamWorks, computer animation is everywhere. In this week-long workshop, students learn the fundamentals of 3D computer animation and modern visual effects. They will learn basic modeling skills so they can design virtual props, sets and characters. They will learn animation techniques to create believable movement and create convincing lighting and textures.

The second part of the class they will learn the basics of visual effects. They will learn the fundamentals of compositing and motion tracking, and how to create effects such as light sabers and laser beams. They will shoot on a green screen and combine live action and computer animation. At the end of the week students will have created a short collaborative science fiction or fantasy film. Student work professional cameras, high-end workstation computers and professional software such as Maya and After Effects.

Day 1: Basic software navigation and computer modeling techniques for organic and inorganic characters, props and sets.

Day 2: Introduction to 3D animation techniques and dynamics such as gravity fields. Lighting and texturing introduced.

Day 3: Into to visual effects. Combining live action with effects such as lightning and particle generators.

Day 4: Chroma keying using a green screen to combine multiple live action shots visual effects and computer animation.

Day 5: Students work as part of a production team combining their talents to create a short visual effects intensive film.

Commuter Student Tuition: $550 (includes daily lunch)

*Resident Student Tuition: $900 (includes room and three meals per day)

*Students must be at least 16 years of age to live on campus in a residence hall.
