Assistant or Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering
About the University:
Point Park University, a private coeducational institution located in downtown Pittsburgh, has an enrollment of approximately 4,000 full- and part-time students in more than 50 majors and concentrations. Founded in 1960 as Point Park College, it is known for providing its students with an experience that combines the liberal arts with career education. The University offers associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees through its four academic schools.
The Department of Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Technology at Point Park University invites applications from accomplished, versatile, and enthusiastic engineering practitioners for a tenure-track position at the assistant or associate professor level. This position will support a new bachelor of science program in electrical engineering that is currently seeking first accreditation from ABET. The successful candidate must be available to join the department for the fall 2020 term.
The primary duty of this position is developing and delivering lecture and laboratory courses in the areas of electric machines, power systems, and power electronics while supervising the program’s newly-built electrical power laboratory. The ideal candidate will possess the versatility to teach in other areas of electrical engineering and additionally to teach in the mathematics, physics, and engineering management programs on a limited basis.
The secondary duty of this position is to assume a leading role in developing, approving, and implementing a master of science program in electrical engineering that builds upon the current undergraduate program. Graduate program directors earn release time for their duties and are encouraged to pursue external funding for research and instruction.
Additional duties of this position include advising students, participating in institutional service and governance, engaging in professional development (including research in the content and pedagogy of engineering), and furthering connections between the program and its external constituents. An essential component of institutional service is a commitment to outcomes-based education and participation in assessment of student learning according to ABET standards and practices.
The successful candidate will possess demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively in oral, written, and digital forms. He or she must additionally possess the interpersonal skills to engage students from a variety of social and educational backgrounds in classroom and laboratory settings. Because the University serves a large adult student population, courses are typically offered on an evening and weekend schedule, and the successful candidate must be available to teach at these times.
Applicants must hold an earned doctoral degree in electrical engineering or a closely-related area. A substantive record of accomplishment in engineering is critical, with college-level teaching experience a plus. The successful candidate must be licensed as a professional engineer in at least one jurisdiction in the U.S.A. or Canada or be willing to pursue licensure in a timely manner after joining the faculty.
