About the University:
Point Park University, a private coeducational institution located in downtown Pittsburgh, has an enrollment of approximately 4,000 full- and part-time students in more than 50 majors and concentrations. Founded in 1960 as Point Park College, it is known for providing its students with an experience that combines the liberal arts with career education. The Position:
The Department of Natural Sciences, Engineering and Technology at Point Park University invites applications from accomplished, versatile, and enthusiastic engineering practitioners for a tenure-track position at the assistant or associate professor level. This position will support our ABET accredited Bachelor of Science program in Mechanical Engineering. The successful candidate must be available to join the department for the fall 2023 term.
The successful candidate will possess demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively in oral, written, and digital forms. They must additionally possess the interpersonal skills to engage students from a variety of social and educational backgrounds in classroom and laboratory settings. Point Park University prides itself on maintaining small class sizes and close instructor-student contact throughout the curriculum, and all faculty are expected to support these values. The successful candidate will show an interest in the continuing evolution of the Mechanical Engineering program. Some Mechanical Engineering courses are offered on evenings and Saturdays, so the successful candidate should be available to teach at these times.
Teaching responsibilities will comprise the breadth of the Mechanical Engineering course offerings, and opportunities to teach math or physics courses are likely to occasionally arise. Other responsibilities include advising students concerning career choices and academic matters, curriculum development, assessment activities, university-wide service and professional development.
Requirements:
Applicants must hold an earned doctoral degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related area. High priority will be placed on candidates with industrial experience in addition to college-level teaching experience and preference will be given to those candidates licensed as a professional engineer. Fluency in appropriate aspects of the ANSYS software would be of benefit.
Demonstrated ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively in oral, written, and digital forms. Earned doctoral degree in mechanical engineering or closely-related area. Interpersonal skills to engage students from a variety of social and educational backgrounds in classroom and laboratory settings. Availability to teach in the evenings and on Saturdays.
Primary Function:
Teaching responsibilities will comprise a 24 instructional units per academic year primarily in the breadth of the Mechanical Engineering course offerings with regular assignments to math or physics courses as needed. A minimum of 4 office hours per week online and/or on-ground during the fall and spring semesters for the purpose of being available to students. Office hours shall be posted and submitted to the department chairs. Faculty members are expected to be available to work with students during scheduled office hours. Faculty members will also be available to work with students outside their office hours by e-mail or in an alternative student-centered format.
Service responsibilities include advising students concerning career choices and academic matters, curriculum development, assessment activities, university-wide service and professional development.
Scholarship responsibilities include research, publications, creative work or other efforts that are generally accepted as scholarship in the Mechanical Engineering field. Faculty members are expected to continue their growth in their areas of expertise through course work, independent study and research, by attending scholarly meetings, participating in co-curricular functions, and engaging in other professional activities relevant to their areas of expertise.
