Part-time Faculty: HUMA 194.1 Healthy on Campus

The Center for Inclusive Excellence at Point Park seeks part-time faculty to teach online courses designed to promote healthy relationships and reduce sexual assault and sexual violence on campus. These courses were built in collaboration with Pittsburgh Action Against Rape and are part of a grant-funded project that will subsidize the cost of enrollment for the first round of participants. Professional development and support for faculty will be offered by the university via the Center for Inclusive Excellence, the Teaching and Learning Lab, and the Instructional Design and Technology Services office.  

Part-time faculty at Point Park are protected by a collective bargaining agreement that provides guidance and protections for working conditions and compensation, as well as other aspects of teaching as a member of the part-time professoriate at Point Park.  

Position Summary 

HUMA 194.1: Healthy on Campus is a one-credit course that aims to reduce sexual assault and sexual violence through education and the promotion of healthy relationships. The class runs for 8 weeks, from March through May, though a modest amount of pre-semester work should be expected. Instructors must be qualified and able to ensure students achieve the following course objectives: 

  • Differentiate between healthy and unhealthy relationship behaviors 
  • Map and label cycle of abuse in relationships 
  • Identify warning signs of abusive or violent relationships  
  • Distinguish between effective and ineffective means of setting boundaries, expressing needs, and accessing support resources 
  • Define sexuality, gender identity, gender expression, and other relevant concepts 

Successful candidates will be collaborative and communicative. They will value transparency, be ready to adapt to the unexpected, and transparent in their values as an educator. Because these instructors will also be interacting with minors, they will be required to obtain PA Act 153 clearances through the PA Department of Human Services, including PA State Police Criminal History Clearance, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, and an FBI Criminal History Clearance (requires fingerprinting). Previously obtained clearances are acceptable if issued within the last 5 years and indicate they are for employment purposes (not volunteer purposes). 

Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Establish and maintain a productive online learning environment that promotes open discussion and inquiry 
  • Achieve the learning objectives for the assigned course using recommended texts, resources, and activities 
  • Establish and maintain regular communication with all enrolled students through the university’s Learning Management System (Canvas) 
  • Follow best practices for inclusive, universal design for learning to ensure access to course materials and learning opportunities for all students 
  • Maintain appropriate professional, ethical, and legal practices as guided by FERPA as well as state and federal regulations guiding mandatory reporting 
  • Support the university’s efforts related to professional development, assessment, and retention 

Desired Experience and Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated experience using decentered, inclusive teaching strategies that support the needs of a diverse group of learners  (decentering, ungrading, project-based learning, UDL, or similar) 
  • Familiarity with Canvas or similar LMS platforms 
  • Experience teaching in online, asynchronous formats 
  • Experience with culturally-rich, trauma-informed education, either in classrooms or as a facilitator or trainer with appropriate agencies 
  • Deep understanding of the course material, either through intensive study at the advanced level (i.e. an earned Masters’ Degree in a related field) or through professional experience working in analogous roles
