POSITION:  Academic Research Writing Associate

DEPARTMENT:  School of Education – Leadership & Organizational Development

REPORTS TO:  Chair, School of Education - Leadership & Organizational Development

SCHEDULE:   This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule upon the successful completion of the 90 day introductory period.

PRIMARY FUNCTION:  This role will work closely with students pursuing a doctoral degree in coordination with the dissertation chair, providing guidance and support in the development and refinement of their dissertations. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in a relevant field
  • Strong background in academic writing and research
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Familiarity with APA7
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and usage, including formatting operations
  • Previous experience in dissertation advising or academic support is a plus

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Consultation and Guidance:
    • Provide one-on-one consultations with students to discuss their dissertation topics and writing strategies.
    • Offer constructive feedback on writing style, structure, clarity, and argumentation to enhance the overall quality of dissertations.
  2. Research Support
    • Guides students to improve writing or content in proposals (Chapters 1-3) according to the scholarly expectations of the dissertations chair.
    • Offer guidance on literature review construction, helping students identify relevant sources and develop a comprehensive understanding of existing scholarship in their field.
  3. Writing Workshops
    • Facilitates small group and classroom workshops covering various writing strategies and concerns, including but not limited to the writing process, academic dissertation writing, and citation style.
    • Facilitate group discussions to create a collaborative learning environment among students.
  4. Editing and Proofreading
    • Review and edit dissertation drafts for grammatical accuracy, adherence to academic conventions, and overall coherence.
    • Ensure guidelines for academic writing are met, including accurate and error-free presentation of data based on evidence and adherence to publication requirements.
    • Provide guidance on citation styles and formatting requirements according to the dissertation style guide expectations.
  5. Time Management and Productivity
    • Assist students in developing effective time management strategies to meet dissertation milestones and deadlines.
    • Offer support in overcoming writer’s block and maintaining productivity throughout the dissertation writing process.
  6. Stay Current on Academic Writing Trends
    • Stay informed about current trends and best practices in academic writing, dissertation formatting, and scholarly communication.
