POSITION:  Lighting Supervisor

DEPARTMENT:  Playhouse

REPORTS TO:  Production Manager

PRIMARY FUNCTION:  The Lighting Supervisor is responsible for taking the lead on the delivery and management for all lighting requirement for Pittsburgh Playhouse productions, related projects and events; and to contribute to the creation of the highest standards in all the Playhouse operations


  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent with at least 3 years professional lighting experience.
  • Broad working knowledge of all aspects of theatrical lighting design and production.
  • Basic understand of the fundamentals of electricity.
  • Ability to trouble shoot lighting systems.
  • Supervisory skills are required. 
  • Some mechanical skills in the use of hand and power tools. 
  • The ability to read and understand ground plans, sections, lighting plots, and electrical schematics. 
  • Proficiency in Vectorworks, AutoCad, and Lightwrite preferred.
  • Understanding and experience with ETC Paradigm, sACN networking, and ETC suite of products preferred.
  • Experience with moving fixtures.
  • Must be comfortable working at heights on genies, ladders, catwalks, etc.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills are required.
  • Great interpersonal and organizational skills.


  1. Responsible for maintaining a safe working environment for students and staff. Manage and train both students and staff working with lighting equipment.    Cultivate and manage a large crew of freelance technicians. (15%)
  2. Manage the installation (load-in, hang, focus) and strike (load-out) of all lighting needs for productions, events, and installations as per design or as needed. (55%)
  3. Maintain lighting equipment in the spaces managed by the Pittsburgh Playhouse including GRW1. Manage the lighting equipment inventory and supplies.(15%)
  4. Responsible for administration, meetings, and paperwork of the lighting department. (15%)
  5. Perform other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Job requires repetitive lifting of light weight objects with frequent bending and stooping, or repetitively lift average weight objects where frequent bending or stooping alternates with lighter activities.  Occasionally lefts heavy objects (over 50 lbs); Frequently work at a fast pace with unscheduled interruptions; Mobility within the office. Ability to walk, sit, stand and climb stairs. Ability to use hands and fingers, to handle office equipment, records and files. Occasionally required to reach with arms and hands, and to stoop, kneel or crouch. Vision abilities required by this job include the ability to read and discern written errors on paper and electronic documents. Ability to talk and hear. Ability to lift up to 15 pounds.

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:  Occasional exposure to objectionable conditions such as those found in variable weather conditions or light industrial settings.
