POSITION:  Safety Manager

DEPARTMENT:  Physical Plant

REPORTS TO:  Director of Operations

PRIMARY FUNCTION:  Chairs the University Safety Committee and provides direction for safety education and training, including fire safety; Establishes all Emergency Planning & Operations; Performs technical investigations and evaluations and provides regulations and technical consultation regarding health and safety issues to faculty and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree and up to 3 years of experience in a related function or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
  • Time management and organizational skills necessary to manage multiple projects, appropriately prioritize workload, plan for resources to meet deadlines and goals, and respond to day-to-day functional needs
  • Experience with computer-based systems preferred.
  • Ability to recognize hazardous situations and implement corrective measures
  • Strong knowledge of safety regulations and standards
  • Thorough understanding of and ability to enforce all federal, state, local, and Company regulations
  • Ability to analyze data
  • Ability to use discretion and independent judgment
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a variety of personalities.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  Supervises one part-time direct report.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  1. Establish and maintain all Emergency Management Planning and Operations including the continual updating of the University’s Safety and Security Policy and Procedure Manual. The coordination of disaster, fire, and intruder response and drills. Plan and oversee the implementation of the mass emergency notification systems.
  2. Provides direction regarding the organization’s safety education and training process; provides technical expertise in the development of all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and similar training materials and provides safety orientation and/or ongoing safety training to university personnel designed to achieve regulatory obligations and reduce risk, injuries, and lost time.
  3. Oversees the University Safety Committee designed to oversee institutional safety in the areas of traditional safety, hazardous materials & waste, laboratory safety, fire safety, emergency preparedness.
  4. Conduct fire safety and emergency response training for staff and faculty and establishes Fire Response Procedures; monitors occupant knowledge and performance during fire evacuations or drills; and investigates fire related incidents.
  5. Establishes guidelines for contractors performing construction and renovation activities on university property and interfaces with project managers to ensure safety requirements are enforced. Has authority to stop all contractor activities until such practices are brought into compliance.
  6. Conducts periodic risk prevention audits of university assets and oversees inspections performed by outside agencies.
  7. Participates in disaster recovery planning for the University.
