Focus and succeed

“I think one very key experience at Point Park was my daily tenure at the library. I knew I was just going to get all A's because that was my target.”

Bamidele Ajisogun was determined to follow through on his goals and aspirations when he became a graduate student at Point Park. His passion and drive got him through his program and onto his job as a Senior Analyst at UPMC in business intelligence, strategy & Innovation.

“It is important for everyone to acquire as many skills or knowledge as possible, so that when you meet an opportunity it just clicks.” Bamidele was able to secure an interview with UPMC because of the confidence he gained at Point Park.

“You get an opportunity, and then your hard work reflects.”

Challenges and opportunities

Originally from Nigeria, Bamidele had traveled to the United States several times before, but had always wanted the chance to study here, do research, and gain valuable experience.

“I was already familiar with the system, so it wasn't difficult for me to adjust in terms of change into a new environment. I like it here because I like Pittsburgh. I like the environment and the people, they’re great.”

Through the Point Park master's program, Bamidele was able to connect with his education and his school community, and soon saw that the challenges of going to school in a new country were outweighed by all the benefits.

Across all fields

With many years of his past spent working in the field of Geophysics, and with his time learning at Point Park, Bamidele was able to gain an edge working in the field of data science through the use of advanced statistical algorithms, and machine learning techniques "to analyze current and historical data to make predictive analytical models for integration, forecasting, and historical events."

“I used my experience of geophysics and data science as applicable to businesses because I was able to integrate my experiences. I was doing my data science research at Point Park University.”

As he went through his studies at Point Park, Bamidele discovered that he could take the experiences from his past and incorporate them into his new pursuits. Point Park also gave him the ability to learn new concepts in a hands-on setting. Once he began his job at UPMC, he discovered that some skills can be applicable in any setting.

Beyond the classroom

As Bamidele reflects on his education at Point Park, he also fondly remembers the extracurricular activities at Point Park University that made him feel engaged and fulfilled.

“I was involved in the Black Student Union, BSU. It was a great group. We were great when we came together, we would discuss what we call common belief, we believe in trying to be successful and working hard.”

Along with the Black Student Union, Bamidele proudly recalls the days when he hosted his own radio station, where he was given the ‘Best Radio Host’ award.

“The name of my radio show was ‘The Oasis’, an African show where we talked about sharing ideas. The Oasis show helps students and young professionals to be educative on the importance of their contribution towards the growth and development of the economy. Students are invited to the studio to share their opinions on educative topics. The show also focuses on singles and relationships, challenges, future ambitions, shout outs to well-wishers such as families and friends on their birthdays, anniversaries, and other achievements. The show is spiced with African songs from the old school days to the latest songs. This show won the best radio show in spring and it [has been] aired internationally.”

Staying connected

Since his time at Point Park, Bamidele has achieved success in his career field and has continued to engage with the school that gave him confidence and opportunities. He was recently honored with the Distinguished Student Award and actively participated on the Point Park Alumni Board. Bamidele was also a part of the nominees for the valedictorian speech at the 2019 graduation ceremony.

He believes all students at Point Park are capable of success and happiness as long as they believe in themselves and work hard.

“Don't ever let anyone make you feel that you cannot do it. Keep working hard and keep believing in yourselves.”

Dream it. Believe it. Build it.
