“Hosting this event reinforces the caliber of the Engineering program here at Point Park. We have high quality, accredited programs, with the Point Park advantage of small class sizes and our Downtown location. I am so excited for our students to have the opportunity to make connections with employers as well as experts in the field from other colleges and universities.”

Engineering students from a variety of local colleges came together at Point Park University on Oct. 7 to make their bids for potential internships and jobs.

Over a dozen local employers mingled with hopeful students in the Professional Career-Readiness Center, enthusiastically talking about their role in the industry with the next generation of engineers. Amid of buzz of excited chatter and the shuffle of resumes, students showed a passion for discovering more about the Western Pennsylvania job market and some of the exciting options for internships.

“I'm looking to see if I can obtain an internship right now, getting to know the companies around the area,” said Benjamin Blavohec, a junior electrical engineering major at Point Park. “I feel like there's a lot of great companies here that I could definitely see myself working for later on.”

The career fair was hosted by The Engineers’ Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP), which provides professional development opportunities for students and professionals working across the region. While the group has consistently been helping local students through internships and career readiness efforts, this was the first time the career fair was hosted by the group since 2019.

For students at Point Park, which offers several engineering degrees such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and civil engineering, the career fair was a good way to explore some of the companies that call Pittsburgh their home. For those in degrees such as civil engineering, the various roles needed around the city presented some unique and exciting opportunities students may not have considered.

“I'm looking for an internship, but even if I’m not selected, it’s helpful to weigh my options and see what kinds of careers are out there and what direction I want to go,” said Andrea Kinger, a freshman civil engineering major at Point Park.

As the faculty at Point Park continue to train the next generation of engineers, these collaborations with groups such as the ESWP are an essential part of their strategy to ensure students are getting real-world experience.
