How have your electrical engineering classes helped you with the work you do for Benshaw, Inc.?

The Circuits Analysis, Electrical Power and Power Electronics courses I took as technical electives in the electrical engineering program have been extremely helpful to me in my current position as an application engineer at Benshaw, Inc.

The course that applies to my current work the most is the Power Electronics course, which taught me the fundamentals of AC to DC and DC to DC converters and DC to AC inverters. These devices are the exact type of devices I size and apply as motor control systems. It was useful to learn how such devices operate and can affect a power system. I have been able to apply this knowledge to the work I perform every day.

The year-long Senior Design course sequence was also immensely useful. The Senior Design course was challenging, but in the end, a pleasurable experience that walked through the process of designing a solution for an engineering problem. The course sequence was a thorough simulation of a real-world project, as it began with defining the scope of a project, requiring design reviews and progress reports during the development, and ended with the requirement of a product being delivered and presented.

What factors made you choose Point Park University to study engineering?

I chose Point Park University for its small classes and flexible class schedules for working adults. I was able to earn my degree by attending late afternoon, evening and Saturday classes. Having classes available during these times allowed me to work full time while going to school part time.

What are your career goals and how do you think your electrical engineering degree will help you reach them?

Throughout my career, I intend to stay within the industrial applications and power industries. My desire is to provide a positive impact to society by applying solutions that lessen the energy consumption of industrial industries. A degree in electrical engineering provides me with the ability to qualitatively and quantitatively analyze issues in order to come up with solutions.
