"Camryn was selected as a student scholar because she had demonstrated an enthusiasm for the field of photography both through her coursework at Point Park and the many other professional and educational experiences she had completed. She was excited to learn more about Silver Eye as a nonprofit organization dedicated to contemporary photography, and to grow her knowledge of how different communities engage with works of art. I think Point Park has given Camryn lots of new perspectives from which to learn about photography - from her courses, to her role as the editor of the photography magazine, to her other internships - she has been given opportunities to consider how photography can operate in different professional and academic spheres."

Kate Kelley, Assistant Curator, Silver Eye Center for Photography

"I’ve met so many talented, creative people in my time here, and the relationships I’ve made at my internships and in my program have helped me gain so many new skills, refine my work and projects and reach my goals. I am forever grateful."

Camryn Drabenstadt

What steps did you take to secure your role as a student scholar with Silver Eye Center for Photography?

I was recommended by a professor and Silver Eye contacted me to set up an interview. It went well and I started working there in September 2020.

Tell us about your responsibilities and learning opportunities as a student scholar.

I get an inside look at Silver Eye’s process for producing new exhibitions, publications and online content. I also have the opportuntiy to speak one-on-one with industry professionals, curators and artists.

You recently completed an artist interview and published an online exhibition. Share more about that.

For this project I worked with artist Sheida Soleimani; we had a conversation about her work that will be shared in a written format and accompanied by a slideshow of images. This was my first time doing an online exhibition, so while I did have prior experience interviewing and working with artists, I learned a lot and made many new connections!

How has Point Park’s B.F.A. photography program prepared you for this role and for your future?

I’ve met so many talented, creative people in my time here, and the relationships I’ve made at my internships and in my program have helped me gain so many new skills, refine my work and projects and reach my goals. I am forever grateful.

What are your career goals?

I hope to attend graduate school in the future and then begin a Ph.D. program. I would like to have a career in museum research and curating, design, publishing and writing.
