How did you land your role at Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, and what does your job entail?

I started at the URA as an intern in September 2016, not long after I graduated from Point Park. I was hired full time four months later. It turned out to be a great fit because I believed in the mission and direction the organization was headed.

As the marketing communications strategist, I work to improve brand awareness in concert with the City of Pittsburgh Mayor’s Office priorities, as well build public trust among the Pittsburgh community related to the URA’s economic development policies and practices. This involves enhancing internal communication, as well as strategizing external communication through branding implementation, storytelling, marketing, website and social media management and outreach efforts around our services and development activity.

How did Point Park’s multimedia program prepare you for career success?

The multimedia program provided me with a number of courses that I could build hard and soft skills around – from graphic design and ad copywriting to journalistic writing, communication law and media ethics. The Downtown location, coupled with dedicated professors, meant that I was frequently introduced to industry professionals from media outlets across the city. Having the opportunity to meet them, hear their experiences and tour companies made it easier to envision a future in communications in Pittsburgh past my undergrad years. Like most people who went to Point Park, I appreciated the small class sizes. Professors had the capacity to get to know me, have thoughtful discussions and provide advice.

What are your favorite Point Park memories?

My favorite memories all involve exploring the city with friends and relaxing at the Point State Park fountain on warm evenings. I also had an amazing opportunity after enrolling in the International Media course with Professor Helen Fallon to travel to Spain and Portugal. Aside from a ton of sightseeing opportunities, we visited major media agencies including the iconic Condé Nast, La Vanguardia, Televisio de Catalunya (TV3) and Havas Media Group. Experiencing all of that with a group of classmates and friends made the trip truly memorable.

What career advice do you have for high school students considering Point Park University?

Like I mentioned, Point Park introduces you to real career opportunities because of its location. If you want to be able to grow during your time in college and come out of it with a career path, Point Park is in a prime location to explore internship opportunities and various organizations in your field.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

My advice for those just starting at Point Park is to be sure to stop, enjoy and just exist in your college experience. It’s easy to get lost in assignments and to-do lists while you’re in the midst of it, but before you know it, the four years will be over. Cherish your time with friends, making connections and growing as an individual. It’s an amazing time!
