"Point Park has given me a platform to practice and grow as a sports photographer, where I can attend all athletic events and build a portfolio that has helped me secure jobs with the Penguins and the MLB."
Why did you choose Point Park University, and what do you like about the B.F.A. photography program?
I chose Point Park because I loved the idea of going to school in the heart of a major city, and I knew the university would give me a platform to build my career. The photography program has allowed me to grow artistically and to train for a career as a professional photographer. While the program specifically focuses on contemporary art photography, I learned the ins and outs of the business side of photography, which will be helpful later.
Which faculty members and courses have had an impact on you?
So many faculty members have had an impact on me, especially my photography professors, Ben Schonberger, April Friges and Richard Kelly. They have all looked out for me professionally and opened many doors that would not have been available before.
What are your responsibilities as a game night photographer for the Pittsburgh Penguins?
As a game night photographer for the Pittsburgh Penguins, my duties include capturing all corporate and marketing needs, often interacting with fans and covering various off-ice events. These images are used for social media, graphic design and future Penguins marketing. While capturing the fan experience, I also document in-game action and provide images to the social media team.
You were recently hired as a live content creator for the MLB. Tell us more about that role.
As a live content creator, I supply photos and videos to the MLB for use by the home and visiting teams on social media. These images and videos can be found in many forms, such as on social media, in posters, on playing cards and in advertisements.
How has Point Park prepared you for each of these roles?
Point Park has given me a platform to practice and grow as a sports photographer, where I can attend all athletic events and build a portfolio that has helped me secure jobs with the Penguins and the MLB.
What do you like about living and learning in Downtown Pittsburgh?
Coming from a small town, moving to Downtown Pittsburgh was very different from anything I had ever experienced. But Pittsburgh has offered a smooth transition into city life and has allowed me to access three major professional sports teams directly. Being so central to everything around you means there are endless opportunities.
What are your career goals?
I have a few career goals, the biggest of which is to become a team photographer for a professional sports team or a senior photography manager for one of the professional leagues. Some other temporary goals include photographing the Olympics and all four major American Championships.
Why would you recommend Point Park to a prospective student?
I would recommend Point Park to anyone looking for the opportunities this university can offer, especially in this location. Being that Point Park is surrounded by so many different industries and businesses in the city, the faculty are extremely connected and are always willing to vouch for Point Park students.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I wouldn’t be where I am without my family, and I am forever grateful for everything they have done for me. Thank you.
