Walck won first place for Feature Writing in the Georgia Associated Press Association for "Female Veterans: Unsung Service & Sacrifice." The same story also earned Walck third place in the Georgia Press Association awards for feature writing.

Other newspapers competing in both contests were the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Augusta Chronicle, Columbus Ledger-Enquirer and Macon Telegraph.
